Meet the judges

The judges for Digital Financial Inclusion Challenge are industry experts who have a combination of experience at a corporate level all the way to policy-making. They are also individuals who are passionate about providing the right tools for B40 communities to protect their financial risks.

Yip Jian Lee

Yip Jian Lee is a Board member of FWD Takaful Berhad. She is also the Chairman of the Nominations and Remuneration Committee, and a member of Risk Committee and Audit Committee.

She is a qualified Chartered Accountant of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, England & Wales (ICAEW) and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).

Ms. Yip was the Director of the Institute of Bankers Malaysia from 1985 until 2000. She served on the boards of many public listed companies, financial institutions, and private companies since 1987. Between 1986 and 1996, she served as the Honorary Secretary to the Malaysian-British Society, an association to further promote bilateral relations between the two countries.

Currently, Ms.Yip is an Independent Non-Executive Director of Carimin Berhad, Tokio Marine Insurans (Malaysia) Berhad and the Professional Golf of Malaysia. She is also on the Advisory Council of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – Malaysia, an NGO where she had served as a Trustee and Honorary Treasurer for the maximum term of 12 years, from 1996 to 2009.

Salim Majid Zain Abdul Majid

Salim Majid Zain is FWD Takaful Berhad’s Chief Executive Officer, leading the overall strategy and development at FWD Takaful.

Prior to joining FWD Takaful, he was the pioneering Chief Executive Officer of a start-up Takaful Operator and was instrumental in accelerating its business growth overthe span of 11 years.

With more than 13 years’ experience of helming the lead as a Chief Executive Officer and close to 30 years’ experience in insurance and takaful, he brings wealth of experience in the areas of distribution, product development, marketing, branch operations, strategy, and general management. His leadership skills have been the guiding force – from adopting new technology through to high-level change management and the development of people.

He is a Fellow Chartered Professional in Islamic Finance (F.CPIF) of Chartered Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (CIIF), Fellow of the Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII) and Senior Associate of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).

He also sits on the Board of FWD Technology and Innovation Malaysia (FWD TIM) Sdn Bhd, FWD Group’s shared services entity that provides support services to entities within the Group in the areas of IT, digital hub, actuarial and product development.

With a goal-orientated focus, and a track record of impressive commercial success, he now sets the direction for FWD Takaful – in doing so creating an exciting new Takaful opportunity for Malaysians.

Salim is a strong supporter of financial literacy and believes in providing meaningful protection via multi-distribution channels to reach out to the different consumer segments.

Wan Ahmad Najib Wan Ahmad Lotfi  

Wan Ahmad Najib Wan Ahmad Lotfi is the Chief Strategy & Digital Distribution Officer of FWDTakaful Berhad.

Najib holds two distinctive hats: on the strategic and governance horizon, he leads the strategy and in the distribution space, he leads the development of the digital distribution channels for FWD Takaful.

He was a key member of the pioneering team responsible for the setting up and foundation building of 3 takaful operators in Malaysia, including FWD Takaful – being involved in the entire process chain starting from planning, regulatory application, licensing, operational readiness preparation and launching of the company.

He is a FellowChartered Professional in Islamic Finance (F.CPIF), of which he also is Board member of the professional institution, Chartered Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (CIIF).

He is also a Board member of ISM Insurance Services Malaysia Berhad, an industry driven service company that provides technology and statistical services to the insurance and takaful industries.  

Najib is a passionate advocate of financial literacy and inclusive takaful. He strongly believes in the importance of spreading the message of takaful and that everyone deserves to be protected.

Professor Dr. Asmadi Mohamed Naim  

Prof. Dr. Asmadi Mohamed Naim is a Professor at the Islamic Business School (IBS), UniversitiUtara Malaysia (UUM) College of Business where he started his higher education career since 1999. He is also a Fellow Researcher at Institute for ShariahGovernance and Islamic Finance (ISGaIF), IBS, UUM.

Prof. Dr. Asmadi currently serves as a member of the Shariah Advisory Council of Securities Commission (SC) since 2014. He was a member of the Shariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) from 2013 to 2019.

He also sits on the Shariah expert panel of Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) and a member of Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu Kelantan (MAIK) since 2018.

He is a Chartered Professional in Islamic Finance (CPIF), of which he was the founding Board member of the professional institution, Chartered Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (CIIF) up till 2020.

Prof Dr. Asmadi is also actively involved in researches and academic textbook writing. He was the lead researcher for the research titled “Suitable Takaful Plan and Distribution Channel for B40” produced by UUM and funded by FWD Takaful. He was instrumentally involved in production of the research report – being on the ground throughout the entire information gathering process, having first hand experience engaging and conversing with the various B40 communities to further understand their lives and circumstances via focus groups discussions conducted.

Chiew Hui Lin

Currently based in Germany, Hui Lin is A2ii’s (Access to Insurance Initiative) contact person for the Asia Pacific region.

The A2ii is a global partnership focused on capacity building for insurance supervisors in promoting inclusive and responsible insurance. It aims to extend the reach of insurance, with a focus on the most vulnerable populations. A2ii was established by International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany(BMZ), Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), the International Labour Organization, represented by the International Labor Office (ILO) subsequently renamed the Impact Insurance Facility and FinMark Trust.

Prior to A2ii, Hui Lin was the lead on inclusive insurance in BankNegara Malaysia (BNM), where she worked on regulatory development, product assessments and business models such as mobile microinsurance and direct internet insurance.

Her responsibilities at A2ii include supporting the development of knowledge material for supervisors, particularly on the topics of InsurTech and regulatory impact.

Hui Lin graduated from the University of Warwick with a BScAccounting and Finance.

Azizul Mohd Said  

Azizul Mohd Said is a former Deputy Director, Insurance and Takaful Supervision Department, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

Azizul joined BNM in 1987, where he spent most of his career as an Insurance and Takaful Supervisor before his retirement in 2019. Throughout his career, which spans more than 30 years, he had supervised a wide range of insurers and takaful operators including local conglomerates, multi-national insurers, and professional foreign reinsurers.

A seasoned and well-respected senior insurance supervisor in BNM and among industry practitioners, he was instrumental in supporting BNM’s efforts to implement the ‘Risk Based Supervisory Framework’ and spearheaded the department’s Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) supervisory team.

Apart from his supervisory duties, he also played an active role in the development of the insurance and takaful companies financial submission system and databases, overseeing training and development programs for the insurance supervisors and providing inputs in various policy standards, such as the Reinsurance Guidelines, Risk Management  and Internal Audit Guidelines, the Takaful Operational Framework and Shariah Governance standards.

He was a committee member of the Islamic Finance Services Board (IFSB) working group onthe development of the Standards on Risk Management for Takaful Undertakings.

He holds a degree in Insurance Studies from the MARA Institute of Technology, Malaysia.

A through and through insurance and takaful development advocate, Azizul is passionate in developing young talents for the future and enjoys contributing to the growth of the industry via unconditional sharing.
